Murphy, Richard J.

rjm-portrait-125.jpgRichard Murphy began chasing fire engines with a camera while still in high school. A four decade career as a newspaper photojournalist has followed, primarily at the Jackson Hole News in Wyoming and the Anchorage Daily News of Alaska. That journey has included a team Pulitzer Prize for Public Service, several Best Use of Photography awards from the National Press Photographers Association, and numerous regional awards. He is currently the photo editor of the Anchorage Daily News. While pursuing photojournalism as a career, Murphy has always maintained a body of personal work. Much of that photography is centered in wilderness and focused on natural beauty, subject matter Murphy has found to be a solace from the sometimes hard edge of photojournalism. His photographs are represented in the permanent collections of several museums, as well as in many private collections.

On A Personal Note:

Shortly after I moved to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, sometime in the early 80's, I got to know Richard Murphy or "Murph," as we called him. Murph was the head photographer of our weekly newspaper, The Jackson Hole News. His work got my attention right from the start because I was passionate about photography and it's clear he was too. The News dominated the state's annual press association photography awards, mostly with Murph's photos. Being in a small town there weren't many of us that were that passionate about photography. It was a great loss to Jackson Hole when Murph moved to Alaska to become the photo editor of the Anchorage Daily News, and it wasn't any surprise when Murph was a contributing photographer to a story on alcohol abuse that won a Pulitzer in 1989. The following year Murph contributed to a story about the Exxon Valdez disaster that was nominated for a Pulitzer. I'd kind of lost track of Murph until I asked if he wanted to put some images on Le Fotografie. It's been great to reconnect and see that we still share our passion for making fine photographs.
