Mallams, Matt

mallams-portrait-bw125.jpgWhat Matt Mallams loves about photography is that it helps connect people with their surroundings. Matt feels that most of our society is so rushed that we hardly take a moment to observe what is around us, so he brings that idea into his work and looks for those moments that tend to go unnoticed.  He enjoys exploring the streets without any preconceptions, just working in response to what is given to him and creating compositions mixing light, color, texture, reflection, and interactions between people and their environments. Through Matt's photography, he encourages people to be aware in the present moment. Clients include, Hana Hou, Honolulu Magazine, Contour, The Fader, Aurora, Revolver, San Francisco Chronicle, Wired.com.

On A Personal Note:

I met Matt at a Photography at the Summit workshop in Jackson Hole, Wyoming several years ago. He was a student and I was an instructor but I can tell you with no hesitation that I'm sure that I was as inspired by his work as he was by mine. What I remember clearly is these wonderful handmade journals that he created with a combination of writing, photographic images that he made and found objects. It's sad that there is no real way to produce multiple copies of those journals for more people to see. They are inspiring and there are now dozens of them. I've only held one of them in my hands but I could easily spend a day or two looking at all of them. I absolutely love Matt's spontaneity and his ability to respond to the moment. There are moments of sadness and humor, calm and drama, as well as mystery and social commentary. Le Fotografie is proud to represent Matt's work.
